The Ontario Realty Corporation development plans forge ahead on karst lands
For Immediate Release
June 23, 2009
In spite of The Hamilton Conservation Authority’s resolution based on scientific reports that lands adjacent to the Eramosa Karst Conservation area be preserved; and, in spite of the City of Hamilton’s New Official Plan designation of Core Natural Heritage Area for these lands; and, in spite of strong public support for the preservation of these lands, the Ontario Realty Corporation (ORC) continues to spend hundreds of thousands of tax payer’s dollars on studies aimed at supporting their goal to pursue intense development on this sensitive area.
The ORC, which manages lands owned by the Province, claims that development of these 37ha of land will not negatively affect the Provincially designated ANSI (Area of Natural and Scientific Interest) part of which forms the Conservation Area. This position has been disputed by hydrogeologists, biologists and local environmental groups. Friends of the Eramosa Karst has strongly advocated for the preservation of these adjacent lands since October 2007.
At a recent Public Information Centre held by the ORC, all the plans presented showed intense development proposed for the site. The option for the inclusion of the remaining 37ha as part of the Eramosa Karst Conservation Area was not presented. All concerns previously presented by the public and by public agencies have been minimized and dismissed. The level of disregard for this ANSI is unbecoming of a Provincial Agency.
The Friends of the Eramosa Karst is a group of citizens who’s goal is to have the remaining ANSI lands included in the Conservation Area. FOTEK urges Minister Smitherman and the Liberal Government to turn the remaining ANSI lands over to the Hamilton Conservation Authority for their preservation for the benefit of future generations.
